Studies in Late Antiquity (SLA) is a journal that provides a forum for scholarly research on global Late Antiquity (150 – 750 CE). This field-leading, international journal is published quarterly by University of California Press and is currently operated at Princeton University. We seek an editorial assistant for SLA who will oversee editorial management of the day-to-day operations of the journal. A cover letter is required as part of the application process and can be submitted as an iFORM. This is a one-year term position, subject to renewal based on performance and funding.

Responsibilities
The primary responsibilities of the editorial assistant will include coordinating the peer-review, copy-editing, production and publication processes of the journal. In addition, the editorial assistant will provide organizational and logistical support for the senior Editorial team of the journal, including oversight of the book-review team, coordination of bi-annual meetings of the Editorial Board, and promotion of the journal.

Qualifications
PhD and minimum one year of experience
Proficiency in several editorial computer packages
Skills and knowledge in relevant research, editorial, and administrative software
Knowledge of the study of the ancient Mediterranean and West Asian world from one or more disciplinary perspectives (e.g., history, art history, archaeology, comparative literature, religious studies, linguistics)
Experience conducting historical research
Ability to work collaboratively with scholars, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds and in various fields and departments
Ability to multi-task and manage projects in accordance with appropriate timelines

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Skills and experience in editing, copyediting, proofreading, and managing the editorial process
Multilingual a plus, especially in one or more languages of modern scholarship (e.g., German, French, Italian, Hebrew) and one or more languages of the ancient or late ancient world (e.g., Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac, Coptic, Arabic)

Dumbarton Oaks invites applications for a Post-Doctoral Fellow to work with the museum team on projects relating to cataloging, publication, and exhibition of the coin collection. The successful candidate will receive training in digital cataloging, collections management, and exhibition planning. They will catalogue the newly acquired Mansfield and Shaw collections of early Byzantine coins, describing, recording, and publishing these coins in the Online Coin Catalogue. They will also work with the Collections Manager and Registrar to accession and house the coins. Building on the work of nomisma.org the Post-Doctoral Fellow will be involved in the establishment of a federated database to catalogue and digitize Byzantine coin holdings in various collections worldwide. In partnership with the Associate Curator and the Manager of Exhibitions, they will help to create temporary exhibits of the coin collection and take part in the planning and execution of educational activities. The fellowship offers unique opportunities to build career skills in digital humanities, museum curation, and collections-based education. The Fellow will participate fully in Dumbarton Oaks’ dynamic community of scholars and programming in Byzantine Studies and will devote 20% of the fellowship time to personal research.

The American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA), a non-profit overseas research institution, is seeking a qualified individual to work for the U.S. administrative office of the School based in Princeton, NJ. This office facilitates the academic governance of the School, as carried out by a consortium of nearly 200 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada, and their representatives, the School’s Managing Committee. The office also manages applicants to programs and fellowship opportunities at the School, as well as Cooperating Institution business and receipt of dues. Work will be conducted remotely. No relocation necessary. Position is part-time, approximately 20 hours per week, year-round, beginning August 1, 2022. Applicants must have the legal right to work in the United States.

The principal duties of the Programs Assistant will involve general clerical support and support for the Managing Committee. Clerical duties include general correspondence, preparation of meeting materials, mailings, and database entry (as needed). Support for the Managing Committee includes compilation and distribution of applications to committees, as well as correspondence with applicants, School members, staff, and Managing Committee members. This position reports to the Programs Administrator. The anticipated salary for this position is $20,000 per year.

Minimum requirements
Bachelor’s Degree. General background in office administration activities preferred. Excellent communication skills required, both verbally and in writing, with strong customer service orientation. Strong self-motivation skills. Computer literacy, especially in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat. Preference may be given to applicants familiar with the structure and organization of the American School of Classical Studies and its programs.

The Publications Office of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, in Princeton, NJ, has a part-time opening for a well-organized and highly motivated individual to support the Editor and Assistant Editor of Hesperia in all stages of production for the ASCSA’s award-winning journal on Greek archaeology and material culture.

The Editorial Assistant will be part of a small, friendly team that works closely with authors to produce scholarly publications of the highest quality. Responsibilities include conducting bibliographical research and formatting, performing artwork assessments, converting manuscripts for production, proofreading, and liaising directly with authors, as well as other production tasks as requested by the Editor.

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Classical Studies, Archaeology, or a related field
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Familiarity with applying author and style guidelines (e.g., the Chicago Manual of Style)
  • Proficiency in Ancient Greek (minimum two semesters)
  • Computer literacy and the ability to work in an electronic workflow

Call for Applications: Part-time Research Opportunity (Medieval Ukraine) at the Index of Medieval Art

The Index of Medieval Art invites applications for a four-month, remote, part-time research position to assist in incorporating key mosaics and paintings of medieval Kyiv into the Index database. This position is made possible by a 2022 Flash Grant from the Princeton University Humanities Council and consists of a $5,000 honorarium to be directed to the scholar.

The successful applicant should have relevant training in art history, preferably with a medievalist background, and should hold a doctorate or have completed all but the dissertation. Applicants may be of any nationality, but preference will be given to a scholar whose work has been disrupted by the crisis in Ukraine. A reading knowledge of Russian and Ukrainian is preferable.

The work position will require roughly two days a week of remote work over a four-month period, beginning in summer of 2022. The successful applicant will work with the Index research staff to catalogue Ukrainian monuments, beginning with the cathedral of St. Sophia in Kyiv. They will be trained in Index norms in cataloging the monumental structure, describing the iconography of its paintings and mosaics, transcribing inscriptions, and adding bibliographic citations, Index subjects, and other metadata. Staff guidance and scans of the relevant print material will be provided. The timeline for this work is somewhat flexible but must be completed by the end of the funded period, December 31, 2022.

Research Fellow at UCL – Hexameters Beyond the Canon: New Poetry on Papyri from Roman and Byzantine Egypt

The Department of Greek and Latin, University College London, is looking to appoint a Research Fellow to work on the project Hexameters Beyond the Canon: New Poetry on Papyri from Roman and Byzantine Egypt (https://gtr.ukri.org/projects?ref=AH%2FW003554%2F1). The Research Fellow will catalogue and produce editions of unpublished hexameter papyri from Oxyrhynchus, input data to the project’s website and digital archive, contribute to the revision of editions by other scholars, take part in regular meetings, help organize events connected with the grant, and participate in outreach activities.

The position is available from 1 June 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter, and is funded until 31 March 2026. The salary for this post is at Grade 7, commencing at £36,770 p.a., inclusive of London weighting if the post-holder is based in London. The full-time positions are to be filled from 1st October 2022 onwards, limited to 36 months. An application for an extension of the project beyond the 36 months is planned. The project will integrate historical and theological research on the Ecclesiastical History in a new critical edition, translation, and comprehensive commentary on the third part of this work. Open access digital and print versions of the edition, translation, and commentary are planned and preliminary digital publications in several repositories will invite feedback from the scholarly community during the course of the project. Collaboration with several digital humanities projects will also result in a suite of didactic aids to support students and scholars learning Syriac. Job: Ukraine Heritage Crisis Specialist

Position Summary:

World Monuments Fund (WMF) is seeking a Ukraine Heritage Crisis Specialist for a 12-month, fixed term position. Through public statements on February 25 and March 2, 2022, WMF expressed its deep concern over the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. WMF deplores the loss of life that continues to take place in Ukraine and expresses its solidarity with the Ukrainian people. WMF remains concerned about the immediate and urgent threat to Ukraine’s cultural heritage, including the country’s wealth of cultural heritage places. The Ukraine Heritage Crisis Specialist will support all efforts to respond to the impact of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine on the country’s cultural heritage sector.

Responsibilities:

  • Through networking and outreach, remain informed about developments in the conflict, and, in particular, about impacts of the conflict on heritage places, museums, libraries, and archives;
  • Serve as the primary coordinator between WMF and members of the international community seeking to share information and coordinate their efforts in support of Ukrainian cultural heritage;
  • Identify and cultivate potential partners for WMF within Ukraine’s cultural heritage sector;
  • Identify needs for assistance to Ukraine’s cultural heritage sector and support the development of appropriate response strategies by WMF and its partners;
  • Support the implementation of activities by WMF and its partners, through new or existing channels for the delivery of support;
  • Support communications with WMF’s global audience regarding the impact of conflict on Ukraine’s cultural heritage;
  • Plan for post-conflict intervention by WMF and its partners, including inventorying, condition assessment, and emergency stabilization/protection interventions;
  • Serve as internal source of knowledge on matters affecting the conflict and post-conflict recovery.

Qualifications:

Minimum:

  • Knowledge of Ukrainian society, history, and culture;
  • Professional proficiency in Ukrainian and English;
  • Background in Heritage Studies, Archaeology, Anthropology, Museum Studies, Regional Development, etc.;
  • Experience working in a crisis context or in post-conflict recovery.

Preferred:

  • Graduate degree in Eastern European Studies or in a related field (Ukrainian Studies, Soviet/Post-Soviet Studies) and/or in other fields relevant to the mission of World Monuments Fund;
  • Professional experience in cultural heritage management, development, and/or emergency response.
