The Department of Art History at Rice University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the history of medieval art and/or architecture, broadly defined. We are interested in scholars working on art from roughly 400-1400, without restriction to culture or region. Successful candidates will have a record of publication and service commensurate with their career stage and be alert to diverse methodological approaches to the study of art and/or architecture from this period.

Scholars working within transcultural frameworks are particularly encouraged to apply, as are those whose work might intersect with that being done in interdisciplinary programs and centers at Rice, including (but not limited to) those in Medical Humanities, Medieval & Early Modern Studies, Environmental Studies, African and African American Studies, and the Study of Women, Gender, and Sexuality.

The department offers programs of study leading to both the BA and PhD degrees. The new hire will teach four courses each academic year, covering a range of topics from area surveys to graduate-level courses on specialized subjects of their choice. The hire will also supervise undergraduate independent studies and honors theses, and mentor doctoral students.

Post-doc for 2 years+1 in a research project on ancient invectives

I am searching for a person with PhD in classics or similar, with expertise in ancient or late antique Greek literature to work with me as a postdoc in the project “The History and Rhetoric of Invectives in Greek, Roman and Early Christian Polemics” funded by National Science Centre in Poland.

Some familiarity with the field of digital humanities would be welcomed as I plan to build a Database of Ancient Invective, that may be a bit similar to our previous project based in Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, namely Scrinium Augustini:

My project asks questions concerning the nature, form and content of the invectives used in real-life polemics, starting in seventh-century BC Greece and finishing in the Christian Roman Empire of the fifth century AD. It is designed as the largest-in-scope answer to the question of how ancient and early Christian orators and writers personally attacked, offended and denigrated their adversaries. The project has two objectives: the first is to identify all the instances of invective present in oratory and polemical literature written both in Greek and in Latin, and collect their records in a searchable digital database; and the second is to analyse both quantitively and qualitatively the rhetoric of the material, searching for structural patterns, and stylistic and thematic idiosyncrasies and continuities; reflecting on cultural background and influences; and measuring and assessing the intensity and effectiveness of given invectives.

The need for this project was born from the observation that we lack a comprehensive, comparative study of ancient and late antique invective as a distinctive literary and cultural phenomenon. I would like to check the validity of four specific hypotheses: (1) the models of invective known from the most authoritative literary fiction (epic, drama) influenced the practice of real-life polemics; (2) the models of invective found in the most influential non-Christian writers (Demosthenes and Cicero) are shaping the later history of invective, also Christian; (3) Christian writers used a less intense invective in polemic and reached for it less often than non-Christian writers; and (4) each author often engaging in polemic has developed his own pattern of invective that is recurrent in his writings.

The perfect candidate would be willing to join me in Toruń, but I do not exclude the possibility of working on-line and meet in Toruń only on some occasions.

The contract will be for the position of Postdoc – Research Adjunct at the Faculty of Humanities, Department of Classical Studies of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń for a period of 24 months with the possibility of extension for another 12 months and is supposed to begin this November. Two Positions for 2023-2024

Eligibility: A senior scholar working in any area related to the mission of the School who possesses a significant record of publication and teaching and is affiliated with a Cooperating Institution. Preference will be given to those who have not received recent funding from the School. Previous holders of the Whitehead may apply if the previous term was at least five years prior.
Project: The Whitehead Distinguished Scholar shall pursue research on a project that utilizes the facilities of the School and enriches its academic program. Whitehead Scholars participate in the academic life of the School in a variety of ways, especially by working closely with Regular and Student Associate members of the School during the winter term (late November to late March) on the subject of their expertise, and by joining School trips and excursions throughout Greece. VAP position at UC Irvine

The Department of Art History at the University of California, Irvine, seeks applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor in Art History, with an emphasis on teaching. The School of Historical Studies at the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton NJ) is offering two postdocs in  History of Science and Medieval Studies.

The Institute is an independent private institution founded in 1930 to create a community of scholars focused on intellectual inquiry, free from teaching and other university obligations. Scholars from around the world come to the Institute to pursue their research. Candidates of any nationality may apply for a single term or a full academic year. Studies in Late Antiquity (SLA) is a journal that provides a forum for scholarly research on global Late Antiquity (150 – 750 CE). This field-leading, international journal is published quarterly by University of California Press and is currently operated at Princeton University. We seek an editorial assistant for SLA who will oversee editorial management of the day-to-day operations of the journal. A cover letter is required as part of the application process and can be submitted as an iFORM. This is a one-year term position, subject to renewal based on performance and funding.

The primary responsibilities of the editorial assistant will include coordinating the peer-review, copy-editing, production and publication processes of the journal. In addition, the editorial assistant will provide organizational and logistical support for the senior Editorial team of the journal, including oversight of the book-review team, coordination of bi-annual meetings of the Editorial Board, and promotion of the journal.

Dumbarton Oaks invites applications for a Post-Doctoral Fellow to work with the museum team on projects relating to cataloging, publication, and exhibition of the coin collection. The successful candidate will receive training in digital cataloging, collections management, and exhibition planning. They will catalogue the newly acquired Mansfield and Shaw collections of early Byzantine coins, describing, recording, and publishing these coins in the Online Coin Catalogue. They will also work with the Collections Manager and Registrar to accession and house the coins. Building on the work of the Post-Doctoral Fellow will be involved in the establishment of a federated database to catalogue and digitize Byzantine coin holdings in various collections worldwide. In partnership with the Associate Curator and the Manager of Exhibitions, they will help to create temporary exhibits of the coin collection and take part in the planning and execution of educational activities. The fellowship offers unique opportunities to build career skills in digital humanities, museum curation, and collections-based education. The Fellow will participate fully in Dumbarton Oaks’ dynamic community of scholars and programming in Byzantine Studies and will devote 20% of the fellowship time to personal research.
