The Research Assistant position has been funded by the Giorgi Family Foundation to assist Andrea Myers Achi, Assistant Curator in The Department of Medieval Art and The Cloisters with work related to the Museum’s Early Christian and Byzantine Collections. The primary project through 2024 will be the completion of the organization, installation and deinstallation of the exhibition “Africa and Byzantium” (working title) that opens October 30, 2023. The show will explore translations of Byzantine art and culture by local and foreign artists working in Africa from the fourth through fifteenth centuries and beyond. Additionally, the Research Assistant will be involved with the continuing development of the organization of the Museum’s Byzantine Egyptian collections; and assisting with the maintenance of the Early Christian and Byzantine portions of the Medieval Department’s permanent galleries. All of this is done in collaboration with C. Griffith Mann, Michel David -Weill Curator in Charge of the Department and other curators as relevant.
The Graduate Department of Religion at Vanderbilt University is accepting applications to the Historical Studies track of the Master of Arts program from students interested in the study of Syriac Christianity within the broader contexts of late antiquity and the early middle ages.
Course offerings are focused on the history of Christianity in late antiquity, language study in classical Greek, Latin, Syriac, and Arabic, the material culture and archeology of the Eastern Mediterranean world, the intersections of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, and the application of the digital humanities to these fields through collaborative research projects such as Syriaca.org.
Students in the Graduate Department of Religion may also take courses from departments across Vanderbilt University including in Classical and Mediterranean Studies, History, History of Art, Islamic Studies, and Jewish Studies. Language instruction is offered on a rotating basis in Biblical Hebrew, Classical Greek, Classical Latin, Classical Syriac, and Classical Arabic. Vanderbilt also offers field work opportunities in the archeology of the Eastern Mediterranean and Levant, including current excavations at Caesarea Maritima.
Faculty members offering courses in the program include Annalisa Azzoni, Jelena Bogdanović, Issam Eido, Phillip Lieberman, Richard McGregor, David Michelson, Joseph Rife, Betsey Robinson, and Choon-Leong Seow, among others.
Admitted students are eligible for two years of funding through the Graduate Department of Religion including full tuition and paid research or teaching assistantships.
Graduates of this MA program have successfully gone on to enroll at Ph.D. programs in a variety of fields including Religious Studies, Classics, Central Asian Studies, and Medieval Studies.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS AND SELF-NOMINATIONS TO BSANA GRADUATE STUDENT COMMITTEE
The elections committee of the Byzantine Studies Association of North America Graduate Student Committee invites nominations (including self-nominations) to the committee for terms beginning at the forthcoming BSC in Cleveland, December 9–12, 2021.
As per our by-laws, the elections committee, formed by the four outgoing members, seeks nominees who represent diversity in race, gender, geographic distribution, public/private institutions, and MA/PhD membership within the field of Byzantine studies. If elected at the 2021 meeting, new members will serve until the 2023 meeting, joining the four remaining members to form a board of eight in total.
Committee members seek to grow graduate membership and create a strong graduate community, bringing together students in all related fields of Byzantine Studies. Additionally, we aim to increase graduate attendance at the BSC through a guaranteed session and the presentation of annual committee reports at the BSC member’s meeting. We have found the experience very rewarding!

The program runs the full academic year, from early September to late May. All advanced graduate students interested in an intensive survey of the art, archaeology, history, and topography of Greece, from antiquity to the present, are encouraged to apply. There are no grades and no university credit offered, but participation in the Regular Program is a widely recognized part of graduate training in Classics and related fields.
Regular Members reside in Athens, using Loring Hall as their home base, throughout the nine-month academic year (September through May). Students receive comprehensive training through visits to the principal archaeological sites and museums of Greece as well as in seminars led by resident and visiting scholars. They also have the option to take part in the training program at the Corinth excavations. Eligibility: Regular Membership is open to citizens of the United States or Canada who are graduate students at a college or university in those countries, or to non-citizens enrolled in a graduate program at a cooperating institution. The US or Canadian citizen must be enrolled at a US or Canadian institution at the time of application. Preferably applicants will have completed one or more years of graduate study before entering the School, but well qualified undergraduate seniors who shall hold a baccalaureate degree at the time of entry shall be considered for admission and for the fellowship competition. Applicants are expected to have a reading knowledge of French and German. Reading ability in Ancient Greek, some familiarity with modern Greek, as well as other relevant foreign languages, will be helpful. Application: An online application and three letters of recommendation must be submitted. Applicants are required to submit scans of official academic transcripts as part of the online application.
