Call for Sessions: Mary Jaharis Center Sponsored Panel, 48th Annual Byzantine Studies Conference

As part of its ongoing commitment to Byzantine studies, the Mary Jaharis Center for Byzantine Art and Culture seeks proposals for a Mary Jaharis Center sponsored session at the 48th Annual Byzantine Studies Conference to be held at the University of California, Los Angeles, November 3–6, 2022. We invite session proposals on any topic relevant to Byzantine studies.

Session proposals must be submitted through the Mary Jaharis Center website (https://maryjahariscenter.org/sponsored-sessions/48th-bsc). The deadline for submission is April 22, 2022.

If the proposed session is accepted, the Mary Jaharis Center will reimburse a maximum of 5 session participants (presenters and chair) up to $600 maximum for scholars based in North America and up to $1200 maximum for those coming from outside North America. Funding is through reimbursement only; advance funding cannot be provided. Eligible expenses include conference registration, transportation, and food and lodging. Receipts are required for reimbursement. For scholars participating remotely, the Mary Jaharis Center will reimburse participants for conference registration.

The Forty-Eighth Annual Byzantine Studies Conference

DEADLINE: April 30, 2022

The Forty-Eighth Annual Byzantine Studies Conference (BSC) will be held at the University of California, Los Angeles, from Thursday, November 3, through Sunday, November 6, 2022. The conference will be hosted by the CMRS Center for Early Global Studies with the collaboration of the UCLA Stavros Niarchos Foundation Center for the Study of Hellenic Culture and assistance from the Pourdavoud Center for the Study of the Iranian World. The Local Arrangements Co-Chairs are Sharon E. J. Gerstel (Department of Art History) and Zrinka Stahuljak (Department of Comparative Literature).

The Program Committee invites proposals for papers on all topics and in all disciplines related to Byzantine Studies, broadly construed. This year the BSC especially encourages papers that examine transcultural connections or situate Byzantium/Byzantine developments within larger historical, regional, and/or global contexts. With the goal of engaging a wider audience, we also encourage panels that forge a dialogue between Byzantine Studies and cognate fields.

Letter from the BSANA President

Dear BSANA members,
Happy New Year!

Thank you to everyone who joined us at our recent, hybrid BSC!
We had 284 participants — 141 in person, and 143 remote, which is a promisingly robust attendance. In addition to our North American attendees, we had participants join us remotely from 17 countries. We are grateful to Betsy Bolman and her crew at Case Western Reserve and the Cleveland Museum, who gave us such a gracious welcome and a seamless, hybrid conference. Particular thanks go to Galina Tirnanic and the Program Committee for putting together a complex puzzle of in-person and remote speakers.

We continue to be grateful to the Mary Jaharis Center for Byzantine Art and Culture, who sponsored three panels geared toward our graduate and early career members, and two sessions.

Four new Board Members were elected at the Saturday lunch: Christina Christoforatou, Baruch College, CUNY; Alice Lynn McMichael, Michigan State University; Jordan Pickett, University of Georgia; and Shaun Tougher, Cardiff University. We welcome them, and thank the members who cycled off the Board this year for their service: Ben Anderson, Hannah Ewing, Meredith Riedel, Alexander Riehle.

A Post-Conference Survey has just been issued and I urge you all to respond—your input helps us to shape our conferences and our policies to better suit your needs.

On Saturday the new Board convened to elect new officers. We are building on the knowledge gained during the pandemic, with Alice Sullivan continuing as Secretary, Brad Hostetler as Communications Officer, Byron MacDougall as Vice President, and Lynn Jones as President. Ruma Salhi has agreed to serve as Treasurer, and we thank Tia Kolbaba, who is stepping down after two years. Please check the website, bsana.net, for the emails of our Executive Board.

We look forward to our next conference, November.3-6, 2022, in Los Angeles. Our hosts are Sharon Gerstel and Zrinka Stahuljak, the CMRS Center for Early Global Studies, the UCLA Stavros Niarchos Foundation Center for the Study of Hellenic Culture, and the Pourdavoud Center for the Study of the Iranian World. We hope to see you there!

I am extending the deadline for early registration to midnight on Monday, Nov. 29.
While this conference is free for graduate students and contingent scholars, it is going to be expensive! Therefore, donations are gratefully received. Please choose the Dept. of Art History and Art in the drop down menu. Thanks very much to those of you who have already given.

Call for Nominations to the BSANA Graduate Student Committee

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS AND SELF-NOMINATIONS TO BSANA GRADUATE STUDENT COMMITTEE

The elections committee of the Byzantine Studies Association of North America Graduate Student Committee invites nominations (including self-nominations) to the committee for terms beginning at the forthcoming BSC in Cleveland, December 9–12, 2021.

As per our by-laws, the elections committee, formed by the four outgoing members, seeks nominees who represent diversity in race, gender, geographic distribution, public/private institutions, and MA/PhD membership within the field of Byzantine studies. If elected at the 2021 meeting, new members will serve until the 2023 meeting, joining the four remaining members to form a board of eight in total.

Committee members seek to grow graduate membership and create a strong graduate community, bringing together students in all related fields of Byzantine Studies. Additionally, we aim to increase graduate attendance at the BSC through a guaranteed session and the presentation of annual committee reports at the BSC member’s meeting. We have found the experience very rewarding!

Please send your nominations (or any questions you may have) to the elections committee at bsana.grad@gmail.com by December 9th. Please include the nominee’s name, rank, institution, and discipline; and please confirm that the nominee has agreed to serve if elected.
