The Hilandar Research Library (HRL), the Resource Center for Medieval Slavic Studies (RCMSS), and the Department of Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures (SEELC) at The Ohio State University host a four-week intensive Summer Institute for qualified graduate students in Columbus, Ohio, every other year. The Medieval Slavic Summer Institute (MSSI) offers lectures in two areas: (1) Manuscript Description and Access and (2) Readings in Church Slavonic. Manuscript material on microform from the HRL’s extensive holdings forms a large part of the lectures and homework assignments. There are also a number of lectures on related specific topics. By the end of the Institute, each participant will be able to describe an original Slavic manuscript relying on lectures and hands-on work.

Space is limited to 12 participants.

The intensive nature of the Institute leaves little to no room for participants to have time to pursue outside commitments such as teaching online courses, studying for general exams or spending significant time conducting their own research. (HRL/RCMSS offers other types of grants for individual research.)

Applicants must be graduate students with a BA degree and with a reading knowledge of Cyrillic and of at least one Slavic language. Preference will be given to applicants with reading knowledge of Old Church Slavonic or some other pre-modern Slavic language.

The HRL is the largest repository of medieval Slavic Cyrillic texts on microform in the world and includes holdings from over 100 monastic, private, museum, and library collections from twenty-three countries. There are over 6,000 Cyrillic manuscripts on microform in the HRL, as well as over 1,000 Cyrillic early pre-1800 printed books on microform. The holdings range from the eleventh to twentieth centuries, with a particularly strong collection of manuscripts from the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries. About half of the manuscripts are East Slavic, with much of the remainder South Slavic in provenience. Learn more about the HRL here.

CONSTANTINE AND GEORGE MACRICOSTAS FELLOWSHIP AT THE GENNADIUS LIBRARY

The Constantine and George Macricostas Fellowship at the Gennadius Library supports research on Orthodox Christian Studies with an emphasis on history, religious traditions, and geographical, geopolitical, and cultural reach. Of particular interest is the significant role that the institution of the church played in the broader history of Hellenism. Opened in 1926 with the 26,000-volume collection of diplomat and bibliophile Joannes Gennadius, the Gennadius Library now houses 145,000 titles of rare books and bindings, research materials, manuscripts, archives, and works of art that illuminate Hellenism, Greece, and neighboring civilizations from antiquity to modern times. The collection includes rare and unique items on the intellectual, social, cultural, political and institutional history of the Orthodox Church through the centuries. Holdings of 90,000 research titles in open stacks complement the rare books and other collections to create a comprehensive resource for the history of Greece across the ages. The fellowship is for research in the Gennadius Library for the coming full academic year.

Eligibility: Ph.D. students and those who have earned the Ph.D. within the last 5 years with research projects focusing on the historical, political, and sociological dimensions of Eastern Orthodox religion from Late Antiquity to the present are eligible. The fields of study may include, but are not limited to religious studies, anthropology, history, philosophy, politics, law, and sociology. Open to all nationalities.

Terms: A stipend of $11,500 plus room and board in Loring Hall, and waiver of School fees. Meals, Monday through Friday, are provided at Loring Hall for the fellow. Fellows are expected to be engaged full-time in the supported research from early September 2024 to late May 2025, and are expected to participate in the academic life of the School. Any concurrent employment requires permission of the Director of the School. A final report is due at the end of the award period, and the ASCSA expects that copies of all publications that result from research conducted as a Fellow of the ASCSA acknowledge the support of the ASCSA and be contributed to the Gennadius Library.

Application: Submit an online application. An application consists of a curriculum vitae, description of the proposed project (up to 750 words), and two letters of reference to be submitted online. Applications should specifically reference the Gennadius Library or its holdings, as well as the proposed project’s relation to the history of the Orthodox Church. Student applicants must submit transcripts. Scans of official transcripts are acceptable.

In memoriam: Aristeides Papadakis

Please note the following obituary, commemorating Dr. Aristeides Papadakis (August 1, 1936-September 16, 2023). The text below is from the website of Devol Funeral Home, where friends and family can leave a message on the digital tribute wall.

“Dr. Aristeides Papadakis fell asleep in the Lord on September 16, 2023. He was born August 1, 1936, to Michael and Stephania Papadakis in Heraklion, Crete, Greece. He moved to New York City with his parents as a young child. He graduated from Holy Cross Orthodox Seminary in Brookline, Massachusetts and continued his studies at Fordham University earning a scholarship to study at Dumbarton Oaks in Washington D.C. After completing his PhD, he became a professor at the University of Maryland.

Professor Papadakis was a scholar of Byzantine, medieval, and religious history. He was the author of several books and many articles on the history and theology of the Eastern Orthodox church, which included being asked to act as editorial consultant and contributor to the Oxford Dictionary of Byzantium. He participated and lectured at international conferences at the invitation of several universities and institutions, including the Pontifical Committee for Historical Sciences of the Vatican, the Harvard University Center for Byzantine Studies at Dumbarton Oaks, the University of London, University of Cyprus, and Fordham.

Aristeides is survived by his sister in law, Georgia, nieces Anna (David) and Xanthe, his nephew Michael (Carmen), great nephew Cole, and great niece Zoe (Niranjan).

He was a devoted member of the community of St. Nicholas Cathedral in Georgetown.

Friends and family will always remember Aristeides for his gracious manners and gentle spirit.

A memorial service will take place at 10:30 a.m. on September 25th at St. Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral in Washington DC.

Interment at Rock Creek Cemetery immediately following.”

Dumbarton Oaks Fellowships and Grants

Supporting research and learning internationally in Byzantine, Garden and Landscape, and Pre-Columbian studies.

Dumbarton Oaks Fellowship Programs welcome applications for 2024-2025. Since 1940, the institution has supported scholarship in the Humanities through its fellowships and grants.

Applications and instructions are available online. The deadline to apply for these opportunities is Wednesday, November 1 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern.


Research Fellowships

Fellowships are awarded to scholars who hold a PhD or appropriate final degree at the time of application, or who have established themselves in their field, and wish to pursue their own research.

Junior Fellowships are awarded to degree candidates who at the time of application have fulfilled all preliminary requirements for a PhD or appropriate final degree, and plan to work on a dissertation or final project while at Dumbarton Oaks, under the direction of a faculty member from their own university.

Fellowships and Junior Fellowships are normally awarded for the academic year, and recipients are expected to be in residence at Dumbarton Oaks to devote full time to their study projects without undertaking any other major activities.


William R. Tyler Fellowships are for Harvard graduate students in art history, archaeology, history, and literature of the Pre-Columbian/early Colonial or Mediterranean/Byzantine worlds; or in Garden and Landscape history.


Intended to expand significantly the opportunities offered by Dumbarton Oaks to study the history and future of landscapes through the lenses of democracy, race, identity, and difference, Mellon Fellowships in Democracy and Landscape Studies are available, with preference given to candidates with terminal degrees, such as a PhD or MLA.


The Flora Clancy Summer Fellowship in Maya Studies for Latin American Researchers is available to scholars in the field of Maya studies on any level of advancement beyond the first year of graduate study (post-Licenciatura) who are academically based in Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, or El Salvador.


The I Tatti–Dumbarton Oaks Joint Fellowship for Eastern Mediterranean Studies is available to early- and mid-career scholars whose work explores cross-cultural contacts in and beyond the late medieval and early modern Mediterranean.

Grants

Project Grants support scholarly projects by applicants holding a PhD or the equivalent. Support is generally for archaeological investigation as well as for the recovery, recording, and analysis of materials that would otherwise be lost.

ASCSA Summer Education for Teachers

2024 SUMMER EDUCATION PROGRAM FOR HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS AND UNDERSERVED YOUTH

Thanks to a grant from the Jessie Ball duPont Fund, the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA) invites high schools and other organizations that work with high school-age students to apply for a ten-day summer education program in Greece. This summer experience, developed for underserved youth and their teachers, will introduce students to the archaeology of Ancient Greece and the culture of the modern country while providing their teachers with guidance in designing lesson plans relating archaeology to curriculum objectives in various subject areas.

This unique opportunity will open students’ horizons to new ideas and experiences. For teachers interested in teaching history, literature, philosophy and other humanistic subjects with a hands-on, experiential model, this opportunity will help create new curricula and lessons to engage students. This program aims to give students with few study-abroad opportunities expanded insight into cultural diversity, global and historical awareness, and the humanities.

Term: Ten days, inclusive, during summer 2024. Specific dates to be determined.

Eligibility and Qualifications: High schools, school districts, foster youth organizations or other similar organizations serving high school students in the United States are eligible to apply. Applicant organizations must demonstrate a clear focus on serving underrepresented or underserved high school students. The person who submits the application should be the point of contact with the ASCSA, if awarded the grant.

Description: The student experience will focus on the archaeological expertise of the ASCSA, with guidance in Athens from the Director of the Athenian Agora Excavations, Dr. John Papadopoulos (UCLA), and in Corinth and the surrounding area from excavation directors in that region. The students and teachers will visit archaeological sites and museums, and engage with expert guest speakers to deepen their understanding of Greece’s landscape, history, literature, and material culture. The program offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience the ancient sites, monuments, and culture of Greece first-hand with exclusive access to archaeological sites and storerooms with excavated artifacts. Committed to presenting a comprehensive view of Greece’s rich history and archaeology, this program involves long days and extensive walking, often over uneven terrain, in the hot Mediterranean summer, where many days over 85ºF can be expected.

The school, school district, or other organization awarded this program will select the 10 students and 9 teachers who will participate. Once in Athens, Dr. Dawndria Cox will be the group leader for summer 2024. She received her doctorate in Educational Leadership and Management in 2013 from Alliant International University, and currently teaches at Lynwood Middle School (Lynwood, California). She is a board member of the Los Angeles County Society of the Archaeological Institute of America and a former fellow of the ASCSA.

Dr. Cox will work with the awardees and the ASCSA staff to develop the specific itinerary for the summer program. Attached to this call for applications is last year’s program itinerary as an example of what can be accomplished during the program. Participants will be transported to various historical sites and museums by van with a professional driver. Hotel accommodations are planned with two to three students sharing a room and likewise double occupancy for teachers.

Outcome: The program aims to provide teachers with material to enhance their curriculum, to provide students with hands-on, on-site learning experiences. Teachers will come away with many ideas for a teaching unit about ancient Greece and the ancient Mediterranean. Students will be assigned a short homework assignment before the trip, and during the trip will use the knowledge from their assignment on-site. Schools can also add their own homework assignments to the program, if they wish. The students and teachers will gain experiences with new cultures, new ideas, and first-hand interactions with history.

Stipend, Budget, and Logistics: The ASCSA provides the awardee with up to $27,500 USD in support of the program. The funds are dispensed as reimbursement upon submission of receipts (lump-sum invoices from travel agencies may be payable directly by the ASCSA). Funds may be used to cover travel, room and board costs for student and adult participants, for example: $15,500 airline/roundtrip expenses, $4,500 bus rental/in-country travel costs, $5,000 hotel rooms, $2,500 board/food expenses. The awardee is responsible for booking travel arrangements (such as flights, bus rentals, hotel accommodations, etc.) but is urged to consult with ASCSA staff before finalizing any arrangements. The ASCSA will coordinate some in-Greece logistics, and will also connect the awardee with a Greek travel company for in-Greece travel coordination. Please be aware that the awardee is responsible for any surplus of costs associated with the program, as the ASCSA can only reimburse up to $27,500 USD in total. The ASCSA is neither responsible for nor will be held liable for any overspending associated with the program. Thus, the applying school or school district must be prepared to take on any extra costs that may be incurred during the planning and execution of the program. Likewise the ASCSA provides logistical advice and support as well as scholarly expertise, but the awardee bears full responsibility for the health, safety and security of all participants.

Application Process: Submit an application statement (max. 1300 words) addressing your school’s/school district’s or other organization’s interest in the program, foreseeable benefits to your participation, eligibility for the program (addressing the population the school/organization serves), as well as any previous experience in planning travel programs (locally, nationally, or internationally) by October 31, 2023.
