Byzantine City Workshops

The Institut Français d’Études Anatoliennes d’Istanbul (IFEA) in collaboration with the Department of History, the Department of Archaeology and the Program in Cultures, Civilizations and Ideas at Bilkent University, the Department of  Art History at Hacettepe University, ANAMED-Koç University, and Byzantium at Ankara is happy to announce a HYBRID lecture series in Fall 2022 with the title “Zooming in on Byzantine cities: Αἱ ἀληθείαι τῶν πόλεων.”

This conference aims to provide an interdisciplinary and critical investigation of cities in Byzantium, drawing on the material, literary, epigraphic, archaeological, environmental, and geospatial evidence. We will examine Byzantine cities through a series of thematic sessions centered on the daily life of the city, its infrastructure, and built environment, as well as the relationship between the Byzantine heartland and its coastal and insular koine, urban cultural history, and symbolic spaces, and finally, Byzantine cities as seen and perceived by ‘the other.’

The series will start on 15 October with the session entitled Cities: Material Remnants as divided into two panels which will see the participation of Kerem Altug (IBB), Michael Jones (Koç University), Jorge Quiroga (Universidad Autonoma de Madrid), and Natalia Poulou-Papadimitriou (University of Thessaloniki) and Koray Durak (Bogazici University), and Jim Crow (University of Newcastle) as respondents.

The series will continue with further workshops to be hosted by ANAMED-Koç University (26 November), Hacettepe University (8 December), and Bilkent University (17 December).

Each panel will host two scholars in conversation on the topic in question. After a brief presentation (20 minutes maximum) of the presenter’s main arguments and the historiographical and methodological issues at stake, a respondent will engage with the presenters in a 15-minute dialogue with the respondent. Finally, the three speakers will be all involved in the Q&A session (15-20 mins).

Post-doc for 2 years+1 in a research project on ancient invectives

Via Rafał Toczko

I am searching for a person with PhD in classics or similar, with expertise in ancient or late antique Greek literature to work with me as a postdoc in the project “The History and Rhetoric of Invectives in Greek, Roman and Early Christian Polemics” funded by National Science Centre in Poland.

Some familiarity with the field of digital humanities would be welcomed as I plan to build a Database of Ancient Invective, that may be a bit similar to our previous project based in Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, namely Scrinium Augustini: www.scrinium.umk.pl.

My project asks questions concerning the nature, form and content of the invectives used in real-life polemics, starting in seventh-century BC Greece and finishing in the Christian Roman Empire of the fifth century AD. It is designed as the largest-in-scope answer to the question of how ancient and early Christian orators and writers personally attacked, offended and denigrated their adversaries. The project has two objectives: the first is to identify all the instances of invective present in oratory and polemical literature written both in Greek and in Latin, and collect their records in a searchable digital database; and the second is to analyse both quantitively and qualitatively the rhetoric of the material, searching for structural patterns, and stylistic and thematic idiosyncrasies and continuities; reflecting on cultural background and influences; and measuring and assessing the intensity and effectiveness of given invectives.

The need for this project was born from the observation that we lack a comprehensive, comparative study of ancient and late antique invective as a distinctive literary and cultural phenomenon. I would like to check the validity of four specific hypotheses: (1) the models of invective known from the most authoritative literary fiction (epic, drama) influenced the practice of real-life polemics; (2) the models of invective found in the most influential non-Christian writers (Demosthenes and Cicero) are shaping the later history of invective, also Christian; (3) Christian writers used a less intense invective in polemic and reached for it less often than non-Christian writers; and (4) each author often engaging in polemic has developed his own pattern of invective that is recurrent in his writings.

The perfect candidate would be willing to join me in Toruń, but I do not exclude the possibility of working on-line and meet in Toruń only on some occasions.

The contract will be for the position of Postdoc – Research Adjunct at the Faculty of Humanities, Department of Classical Studies of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń for a period of 24 months with the possibility of extension for another 12 months and is supposed to begin this November. The deadline for sending the applications is 2022-10-08.

The early registration rate for the 2022 BSC ends today!

If you are planning to attend the BSC in Los Angeles, register now! Today (September 14) is the last day to receive the early registration rate. If you would like to stay at the Luskin Conference Center Hotel, then you should book your room as soon as possible. Unused rooms will be released after October 3.
