TWENTY-FOURTH ANNUAL BYZANTINE STUDIES CONFERENCE BUSINESS MEETING MINUTES

Lexington, Kentucky November. 6, 1998

  1. President Thelma Thomas called to order at 1:4S with thanks to Local Arrangements, Program committee, and governing board.

  2. Minutes of the 1997 business meeting were approved with amendments to correct the names of committee chairs.

  3. Election of board members: Because Helen Saradi resigned from the board, the nominating committee proposed Glenn Peers should finish her term until the 1999 Conference. The regular 4-year nominees were Jane Baun, Sharon Gerstel, Eric Ivison and Michael Mass. Ann Terry was nominated from the floor.

  4. Reports

    1. Treasurer: Alice-Mary Talbot announced that the 1997 Conference made a profit of $2700.00, for which John Barker and the Wisconsin Arrangements committee are much to be thanked. The Meeting accepted her Treasurer's Report.
    2. The Meeting accepted the report of Thelma Thomas for the BSC-DO liaison committee. The committee sollicited suggestions for future liaison meetings with Professor Keenan.
    3. 1997 Program Committee Chair Helen Saradi announced the award of the graduate student prize to Elizabeth Bolman for a paper on "Food for salvation: the Coptic Galaktotrophousa."

  5. Announcements
    1. Graduate students who want their papers considered for the prize or who want travel subsidy should see Claudia Rapp about procedures.

    2. 25th Annual Conference: George Majeska, Chair of Local Arrangements invited the Conference to the University of Maryland, October 28-31 or 21-24, 1999, depending on football schedules.

    3. Nancy Ševčenko of the U.S. National Committee on Byzantine Studies reported that the Paris Congress, 2001, will include a Roundtable on the Passion in connection with exhibit of the Ste Chapelle Treasure. There may also be exhibits at the Bibliotheque Nationale, and a historiographic display at the Sorbonne Chapel. She will carry roundtable proposals from BSC members to the upcoming organization meeting.

    4. The vote count showed that the members of the Conference elected the nominees of the governing board.

  6. Other Business:
    1. Eric Ivison announced the Amorium excavation needs Student participants by early December, including people capable of piecing 2 layers of fresco fragments of 9th and 11th centuries.

    2. Alice-Mary Talbot .announced additions to the Do website, including e-published monastic foundation documents from the 61 Typika of a 1999 4-volume set,

    3. Meeting of Governing Board, 6:30 at the hotel.
